dm_roman_sanctuary
The Sanctuary UK have released their new Half-Life 2 Deathmatch map, dm_roman_sanctuary.
At first glance this map appears far too large to accomodate smaller numbers of players, but the creators have integrated bounce pads, teleporters and a multitude of secret doors and areas to speed gameplay somewhat. We played this with anything from 4 to 16 players in the server and never had to wait very long for a target.
The crisp and clean roman styling cleverly gives high visibility of opponents and very few secluded areas to hide in. Weapon layout has been well thought through and the much maligned rocket launcher has been placed behind a fiendish lava pit trap.
Custom textures and sounds have been used throughout and the attention to detail really shows. For example, the steps have been clipped to allow the more advanced players to fly around non-stop at high speeds and the distances and heights of the trickier jumps and gaps have been perfectly measured to allow smooth traversal.
Overall this is some superb mapping from Electric Warrior and Captain Hornet, nicely balancing eye candy with furious action and rapid roaming firefights. Weighing in at over 60mb uncompressed this is one hefty download but worth every byte.
You can check out dm_roman_sanctuary at The Sanctuary UK server, or if you have Steam and Half-Life 2 Deathmatch installed you can click here to join the server.
Update: dm_roman_sanctuary is now available in pg flavour for use in Half-Life 2 Deathmatch Pro and can be downloaded here
